Teaching introduction Dr Chris Wright.mp4

Christopher Wright
PGCE, QTS, PhD.

I come from a family of teachers and academics: my sister and my aunt are both teachers, and my grandfather was the headmaster of a grammar school in Durham. I qualified for secondary school English teaching with a PGCE (distinction) from Moray House, University of Edinburgh, in 2007. After a several years of teaching in Scottish state schools I moved overseas and taught the International Baccalaureate (IBDP) for ten years in embassy/international schools such as Bangkok Patana, and ICS Addis Ababa, before returning to the UK and reading for a PhD in nineteenth century literature at Queen Mary, University of London, which I earned in 2025. I am based in London and I continue to teach GCSE and A Levels in secondary schools. On the left is a video in which I talk at length about the three qualities that make me effective as a tutor. My academic credentials, teaching license, testimonials and DBS enhanced safeguarding certificate are posted below. I look forward to welcoming you to my practice.

Teaching Experience
Pedagogy

I have been a classroom teacher of GCSE (Edexcel and AQA) and A Level English (OCR, AQA, Edexcel) for the past six years in UK secondary schools. During this time I have also taught first and second year undergraduates at Queen Mary, University of London. I taught IBDP English from 2010-2021 at international schools in Ethiopia, Turkey, France, and China. I am an examiner for AQA, Cambridge, and the IBO, standardising marking and attending grade meetings in May and June each year.

Inquiry, integration and reflection are best practice in one-to-one tutorials that support the collaborative learning that is done in school classrooms. I work consistently on key areas for improvement while adding depth to existing knowledge about the subject. Co-constructed learning (Bruner) and critical response learning (Freire) with techniques for building resilience for cognitive load are methods I use to transform the quality of student learning as well as exam performance.

Student Testimonials

Here you can view feedback on my teaching/tutorials by former students. I have had the privilege of helping many hundreds of students pass key exams on their learning journeys.
